Indian drinks are not only lassi and masala chai; there are a variety of drinks in Indian cuisine which not only satisfy your tastebuds but energise you too. Most Indian drinks are made with spices and local ingredients known for their medicinal value, which increase immunity and overall well-being and help to withstand the heat of hot weather outside India. It’s easily available at any Indian Restaurant in Sydney

Traditional drinks from all over India 

Here are some Indian drinks to try out : 

  • Lassi: Lassi is a drink from north India, Punjab. Lassi is made from yoghurt and is thick in consistency. It is sweetened with sugar and flavoured with cardamom and some fruits like mango and strawberry. Its savoury version is flavoured with black salt, cumin and mint leaves. It’s a refreshing drink to beat the heat of summer in an Indian Restaurant in Sydney
  • Masala Chaas: It’s a very popular drink in the Gujrat and Rajasthan regions of India. It’s also made from yoghurt but with a much thinner consistency. It’s a spiced buttermilk, which is very light and refreshing. Some herbs like ginger and mint are added to give it a unique flavour. 
  • Paneer Soda: Paneer soda is a traditional drink in Tamil Nadu. It doesn’t contain any paneer in it. Paneer means rose water in Tamil language. It’s made of sugar, rosewater and soda(sparkling water). It’s easy to make and very refreshing soda. 
  • Toddy: Toddy is a palm wine made in the regions of Kerala. It’s an alcoholic drink made with the fermentation process of sap extracted from a palm tree. It’s high in nutritional value and vitamins. It is very popular in Kerala and readily available everywhere. 
  • Aam Panna: Aam means “mango” in Hindi. Aam Panna is made from raw green mangoes. It is a drink from north India to beat the heat of summer. The mangoes are roasted and pulped, and then salt, pepper, cumin powder, water, and mint leaves are added to give them their unique flavour. In northern India, Aam Panna is widely consumed in the summer as a refreshing drink to replace the electrolytes lost in sweat due to the heat and is a part of Indian Food in Sydney.
  • Jal jeera: Jal Means “water” and jeera Means “Cumin”. So, it’s a drink made with water and roasted cumin powder. It is also a drink of north India. It’s a lemonade infused with cumin powder, ginger powder, mint leaves, coriander, black pepper and black salt. Raw mango powder can also be added for extra tang. It’s a refreshing and appetising drink full of flavours. 
  • Nimbu Pani: Typically known as “shikanji” in India, Nimbu pani is a drink loved all over India. It’s a simple drink made with lemon, sugar, water, cumin powder and black salt. It’s very refreshing and loaded with vitamin C, which is included in Indian Food in Sydney
  • Thandai: Thandai is a drink made during Holi festival days. It’s a cool summer drink full of energy. Made with almonds, cardamom, black pepper, sugar, rose water, saffron, fennel and watermelon seeds, it’s a power-pack drink which refreshes and energises you at the same time.
